Global COP 29 Navigating Sustainability Goals

The global maritime sector stands at a critical juncture as it steers towards a sustainable future, with each milestone a step closer to alignment with the Paris Agreement’s ambitions. COP29, the 29th Conference of the Parties under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, presents an invaluable opportunity for the shipping community to demonstrate its commitment to these climate goals and accelerate its decarbonisation efforts.

In October 2024, over 300 influential maritime leaders met in Tokyo for the Global Maritime Forum (GMF) Annual Summit, titled “Currents of Change.” This gathering, dedicated to the transformation of the industry, brought together diverse perspectives and insights to address the complex challenges associated with climate change. Led by the GMF’s Jan Dieleman and Johannah Christensen, the group exemplified the spirit of cross-industry collaboration essential for advancing sustainability.

As we approach COP29 in Azerbaijan, the global marine industry faces pivotal challenges and opportunities. While priorities such as methane reduction, energy storage, and grid expansion have gained well-deserved focus, there remains an urgent need to address the phasedown of fossil fuels—a cornerstone of meaningful climate action. The summit in Baku is expected to lay the groundwork for policies that push the whole sector beyond its reliance on traditional energy sources, crafting strategies that reflect the pressing need for climate-conscious solutions.

At the GMF conference, Synergy Marine Group’s Executive Chairman, Captain Rajesh Unni, reflected on the words of the COP29 President-designate, Mukhtar Babayev, who invoked the Persian poet Nizami Ganjavi to emphasise “harmony and consent” between humanity and nature. This vision resonated with Captain Unni, underscoring his belief in the need for concrete actions to realise these ideals—a perspective rooted in his early experiences in rural India. His call to translate aspirations into systemic change highlights Synergy Marine Group’s commitment to embedding sustainability across all operations.

With shipping contributing approximately 3% of global emissions, the industry has a significant role in the global transition to a low-carbon future. Inspired by the leadership of IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez, whose commitment to “Human Sustainability” reinforces the importance of an inclusive, safe, and supportive work environment, Synergy Marine Group strives to foster a culture where all seafarers feel valued. A safety-first, inclusive environment is essential not only for seafarers’ wellbeing but also as the foundation for sustainable digital transformation and decarbonisation within the industry.

As a proud partner of the GMF, Synergy Marine Group extends its gratitude to all industry stakeholders who are championing these currents of change. With steadfast optimism, we look forward to COP29 and beyond, embracing the journey ahead as we collaborate across industries and borders, and with competitors, in order to drive lasting progress. Synergy Marine Group remains committed to creating a resilient, sustainable future for shipping and ensuring that the next generation finds this industry a place of pride, purpose, and promise.
