On World Biofuel Day on 10 August 2024 Synergy Marine Group proudly reaffirmed our dedication to the decarbonisation of global supply chains in shipping.
“Recently we successfully completed the B100 biofuel bunkering of the Synergy-managed capesize bulk carrier “NORD STEEL” in Singapore. While biofuels are becoming increasingly common in the maritime industry, this milestone underscores our unwavering commitment to reducing carbon emissions and promoting environmental sustainability. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to D/S Norden for their steadfast support and guidance throughout this initiative”, said Saikat Sen Gupta, MD Synergy Copenhagen A/S.
This successful operation also highlights the practical viability of high-blend biofuels like B100 as alternative fuels. Derived from renewable sources such as used cooking oil or other agricultural waste products, biofuels are critical in the maritime industry’s efforts to mitigate environmental impact and steer towards a cleaner future.
World Biofuel Day, observed annually on 10th August, commemorates Rudolf Diesel’s pioneering experiment with peanut oil in 1893, which laid the groundwork for alternative fuel sources. This year’s theme, “Sustainable Biofuels: Reducing Waste, Feeding Energy,” aligns seamlessly with Synergy Marine Group’s mission to embrace renewable energy sources and champion a circular economy.
Reflecting on our ongoing efforts, Co-CEO Ajay Chaudhry remarked “This frontier project yet again proves that a cleaner shipping industry is within our reach. Biofuels are a key element along our path to decarbonising shipping and establishing a truly sustainable sector. As technical thought partners, we are integral to this transition, influencing technological, operational and human elements.”
Our efforts in using sustainable biofuels have prevented 85.93% of GHG emissions across more than a dozen ships since 2021, compared to traditional fuels. This equates to a reduction of over 10,000 metric tonnes of GHG emissions calculated on a Well-to-Wake basis, setting a significant precedent in our commitment to sustainable shipping – all achieved without requiring engine or fuel infrastructure modifications.
Captain HS Swaminathan, Co-CEO, concluded “This World Biofuel Day we acknowledge the progress in biofuel adoption within the maritime industry, where biofuels now make up over 1.5% of the marine fuel market, and this is expected to increase at a compound annual growth rate of 7-9% through 2030. At Synergy Marine Group we remain committed to continual learning and improvement, ensuring that our efforts in crew training and operational excellence contribute meaningfully to the industry’s environmental goals.”
As we continue to explore and implement sustainable solutions, Synergy Marine Group remains committed to leading the maritime industry towards a greener and more sustainable future.
